MP4 or WebM: which should I choose?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is the safest choice. It plays on phones, computers and TVs, and in almost every app and website, so pick it when you’re not sure.
WebM is an open format made for the web. It works well on web pages and in modern browsers, but some phones, TVs and editing apps handle it less reliably than MP4.
Why some conversions are instant
A video file is a container, such as MOV or MKV, holding separate video and audio streams. If those streams can go straight into the new format, GrabKit simply copies them across. Nothing is re-encoded, so it finishes quickly with no quality loss.
When the streams can’t be copied, GrabKit re-encodes them at a high quality setting. That takes longer, depending on your device and the length of the video.

Is the video converter free?
Yes, completely free. There is no sign-up, no watermark, no daily limit and no premium plan.
Is my video uploaded?
No. GrabKit processes your file with code that runs inside your own browser. The file is never sent to a server, so nobody (including us) can see it. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.
Which formats can I convert?
MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V, MPEG-TS and other videos your browser can read. AVI and WMV aren’t supported yet.
Will converting lower the quality?
Not when the video and audio can be copied: the result is identical to the original. When the video has to be re-encoded, GrabKit uses a high quality setting, so the difference is very hard to see.
Will the converted file be smaller?
When the streams are copied, the new file is about the same size as the original. To make a video smaller, use Compress video, which lets you pick a target size.
Can I convert a video to MP3?
To keep only the sound, use Video to MP3 instead.
