Choosing a watermark style
A single diagonal watermark across the middle is the classic look for DRAFT or SAMPLE: clearly visible, while the page stays readable. A tiled watermark repeats across the whole page, which makes it much harder to crop out of a screenshot or photo.
Keep the opacity low so the text underneath is still easy to read. Gray or a light color works for most documents, while red makes a CONFIDENTIAL stamp stand out.
Why watermark a PDF?
Adding a note like “Copy for rental application only” to ID copies, bank statements or contracts you send makes it clear what the copy was meant for and discourages misuse. It’s also a simple way to mark drafts and samples so they aren’t mistaken for final versions.
